Cycling Keeps You Fit, But You Must Be Fit To Participate In The Sport Of Cycling

The sport of cycling involves the use of cycles in  competitive physical activities. A large number of professionals and even amateurs participate eagerly in sporting events involving the use of cycles all over the world. The sport has assumed popularity in countries of Europe like France and Italy. Many activities are organised in these countries related to the sport of cycling. One of the most popular events is Tour De France .

The sport could not pick up momentum in the US. The different genres of cycling for racing include time-trialing, cyclo-cross, mountain bike racing and track cycling.

There are cycling sports that are of the non-racing cycling genre. They are artistic cycling, cycle polo ad mountain bike trials. The popularity of the sport has assumed widespread popularity to make bicycle racing being included in the Olympics.

Paris was the first to organize a formal bicycle race in the year 1868. The race was a 1,200 meter dash organised on May 31. An Englishman used a wooden bicycle in the race, and went ahead to win the race with iron tyres on his bicycle. The event was so significant for the sport of bicycling that the bicycle he used on the occasion is still preserved in a museum in England.

Cycling as a sport found its way to the US in the early months of 1878. Cycling got  a tremendous boost in the arm when a rider rode on  a wooden track following a train. He is believed to have set a record by covering a mile in only 57.8 seconds, and that too on a bicycle!
